Iowa becomes 11th state in US to allow sports betting

Thursday marked the first day of legal sports betting in Iowa.

Anyone of legal age within the state borders can bet on professional, college, international and fantasy sports.

Hundreds of people stopped by Prairie Meadows in Altoona to register and place their first bets.

Prairie Meadows is one of six casinos where Iowans can register to play either on-site or by using the casino's mobile apps.

Most bets are expected to come in online, but the Altoona casino built an 8,600-square-foot space where betters can make their picks.

Iowans who want to legally gamble online still must stop into one of the six casinos to prove their age and identity and register an account.

Most of Iowa's 19 state-regulated casinos are expected to start offering sports betting.
