One after the other, the U.S. states are individually falling like dominos over the issue of sports betting, Approval is sweeping the country and North Carolina is now in the limelight. It is the thirtieth state this year to introduce a gaming bill. It hasn’t been a major locus of gambling activity, but it is clearly jumping on the moving bandwagon with a new bill in the works. But don’t get too excited. Players will have to wager in person at the two tribal casinos.
The proposed legislation, called S 154, is the recent brainchild of State Senator, Jim Davis, who expects the sports betting bill to pass both Republican-controlled chambers and eventually find approval by Governor Roy Cooper. The plan is to legalize sports betting at North Carolinas two casinos, evidence of the limited venues in the state.
Nevertheless, Harrah’s Cherokee has hosted the World Series of Poker Global Casino Championship for the last few years. The eastern band of this tribe operates Harrah’s Cherokee Resort and Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel. They are the only two casinos in the state and both are located close to the Tennessee border.
Details of the legislation define sports betting to the list of Class III games that are already allowed. Sports betting covers both college and pro events. Senator Davis was asked by the tribe to support the casinos’ expansion efforts as Harrah’s Cherokee is within his district. He had previously gotten two gambling bills passed at their request. It pays to have friends in high places!
But unlike legislation found elsewhere, mobile wagering is not included in the legal options. So players will be limited to in-person betting. This is fine with the tribe. It is an improvement over current laws showing that sports betting is a countrywide event. Meanwhile, expanding gaming options should continue to occupy casino operators and visitors.
