Gary is just about ready to take your bet, man.
The NHL is apparently hungry and appears to be getting serious about devouring its piece of the money pie being cooked up by legalized sports betting. It was announced Friday that Gary Bettman will hold a presser on Monday to make an announcement regarding sports betting and the league’s future involvement in the newly-legalized market. According to sources cited by Sportnet’s Chris Johnson, the NHL intends go full tilt and reap as much as possible from the massive legal gambling industry.
In May, The United States Supreme Court came to a groundbreaking decision when it struck down the federal law banning sports wagering in (almost) every state. Not long before the announcement of the Court’s intent to legalize gambling across the board, the players associations representing North America’s four major professional sports leagues put out a joint statement making their intentions in the burgeoning industry clear.
The first time a major North American sports entity inked a business-to-business deal with a betting company happened in September when the NBA put pen to paper on a partnership that made MGM the league’s “official gaming partner.”
The NFL, meanwhile, agreed to allow individual franchises to strike and sell their own sponsorship agreements with casinos working alongside betting companies and online bookmakers. It allows clubs to “receive advertising from any casinos and fantasy sites, giving them permission to broadcast the adverts during preview and post-match programmes, as well as during preseason games,” according to SportsPro Media.
Major League Baseball put out a statement of its own following the Court’s monumental decision:
Today’s decision by the United States Supreme Court will have profound effects on Major League Baseball. As each state considers whether to allow sports betting, we will continue to seek the proper protections for our sport, in partnership with other professional sports. Our most important priority is protecting the integrity of our games.
“We will continue to support legislation that creates air-tight coordination and partnerships between the state, the casino operators and the governing bodies in sports toward that goal,” the release read.
The NHL looks like its about to fill its boots with that delicious gambling profit, too.
