Sports betting will become legal at Mississippi casinos by the end of the July following a ruling by the state's gaming commission on Thursday.

A May 14 U.S. Supreme Court ruling left it up to states to legalize betting on sporting events. Mississippi was among several states that had already passed legislation allowing sports betting in its casinos.

Mississippi has more than 35 casinos throughout the state, including along the Gulf Coast, in the Delta area in the northwest part of the state, along the lower Mississippi River in Vicksburg and Natchez and on Choctaw Indian land near Philadelphia and Laurel. Several of those casinos, including Biloxi's Beau Rivage and d'Iberville's Scarlet Pearl, had already begun setting aside locations for sports books by the time of the Supreme Court ruling.

Mississippi becomes the fourth state to legalize sports betting, following Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey. Delaware and New Jersey opened their first sports books earlier this month in response to the Supreme Court ruling.
