The Louisiana Lottery Corporation announced Friday (March 1) that they’re joining the Louisiana Department of Health’s Office of Behavioral Health, Louisiana Association on Compulsive Gambling, and the National Council on Problem Gambling to educate the public about the signs of problem gambling and the importance of responsible gaming as part of National Problem Gambling Awareness Month for March 2024.
KNOE reporter Kenya Ross spoke with the Better Business Bureau Friday afternoon and touched on what people can do if they begin developing a dangerous gambling habit.
LDH Guides citizens to an online tool where people can screen themselves for a gambling disorder. According to NCPG, people impacted by problem gambling tend to become addicted to alcohol and drugs - in addition to developing poor financial habits.
"There’s also that concern that we all have - that gambling can be destructive to lives and families. We do know, however, that there are some positive aspects to gambling. We know that it generates revenue in various communities. It creates jobs. But we have to be careful with the balance between good and evil; especially in this industry,” said regional director Jo Ann Deal of the BBB of NELA region.
The Louisiana Association on Compulsive Gambling also offers support through their helpline. You can dial or text 1-877-770-7867.
