The SRIJ has brought in a new rule prohibiting odds postings for live sports events.

Portugal.- The Portuguese gambling regulator the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ) has implemented a new rule taking a hard line on live odds.

No.1/2022/SRIJ prohibits gambling operators from publishing live odds on sports events on any platform, physical or online, including on advertising boards at stadiums and arenas.

The display of live, up-to-date odds will be considered illegal advertising and could result in regulatory action, it said. The move follows the national legislature’s approval of new limits on gambling advertising last October. Other countries, including the Netherlands, have introduced similar measures.

Last month, the Dutch gambling regulator De Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) warned one of the Netherlands’ new online gambling licensees for advertising odds on Twitter during football matches. The KSA didn’t name the operator in question but said it had tweeted updates on games, with some tweets quoting odds and including a link to place bets online.

Dutch gambling rules prohibit operators from advertising during sports events on the grounds that such promotion can encourage impulsive betting. The KSA said it had ordered the operator to cease posting immediately once it became aware of the breach.
