New York State Gaming Commission has provided an update on its sports betting regulations

The regulator published a new version of its regulations including some additions and deletions for the launch of mobile sports betting as well as a list on the banned from wagering New Yorkers due to occupation.

In the recent changes, the regulator finalizes Empire State’s regulations in a document named “Part 5239: Sports Wagering at Casino Lounges and Other Public Casino Locations.” The document offers regulatory definitions and framework for the state’s sports wagering activities. And while its main purpose is retail sports betting it also provides updated regulations on mobile sports betting.

With the recent update on sports wagering regulations and framework, the commission has also provided a list of banned residents of New York from participating in regulated wagering on sporting events. The now-expanded list is compiled of individuals who are employed or related to the sports industry by participating in any form of the team or company.

Now the list prohibits the following types of professions – athletes, players, coaches, referees, physicians, trainers, employees of a sport governing boy, as well as sports agents, owners, employees, or an independent contractor of a team, player union, or umpire union. And finally, official or contractor of a sports governing body if their bets are related to their governing body.

Additionally, the commission has also included to the list, non-gaming employees of casinos, with the exception of those who have received exclusions from the commission. However, it includes individuals such as employees and contractors of a sports wagering licensee, if that person is involved in the management of sports betting or processing wagers and payments.

In order to further decrease the chance of a conflict of interests, the commission has also included a new section that bans the immediate family of a casino employee or contractor from wagering if the related individual is also banned from such activities. Another change is that officials and employees of the commission are also prohibited to place wagers on sporting events.

Operators Announced

Previously, the New York State Gaming Commission announced that it has selected a total of nine gaming brands to operate as operators for mobile sports betting operators. The winners are split into two winning bids and their names are Bally Bet, BetMGM, DraftKings Sportsbook, and FanDuel, as well as Kambi, Caesars Sportsbook, PointsBet, Resorts World, Rush Street Interactive, WynnBET.

Record-Breaking October

The Empire State has witnessed an enormous rise in retail sports betting volume this October, which suggests that mobile sports betting will also enjoy plenty of interest. During October, the four commercial casinos in the state have accrued over US$25.6 million in sports bets, which is an impressive improvement over September’s results by 47.3%.
