Agreement to help authorities crack down on crime

The Malta Gaming Authority and Italian authorities are to sign an agreement to enhance collaboration in tackling irregular activity in the gaming sector, Parliamentary Secretary Silvio Schembri said on Tuesday.

The step will strengthen Malta’s already excellent reputation within this context, the parliamentary secretary for financial services and the digital economy told the third annual KPMG Gaming eSummit.

Some 300 delegates are attending the conference.

Mr Schembri said that the agreement will allow both sides to further share intelligence information in a way that puts them in a better position to detect criminal activity.

He added that Malta's recently-enacted gaming law had placed the regulator in a stronger position to eliminate objectionable elements within the industry and tackle money laundering, fraud and other criminal activities.

Mr Schembri also spoke on how Malta is embracing new technologies, with the Malta Gaming Authority becoming the first world regulator to launch a sandbox framework for cryptocurrency.

The government is also working on a strategy for esports. “Malta, with its current gaming ecosystem and ‘Home of Gaming Excellence’ credentials will provide the ideal landscape for esports athletes, businesses and tournaments to thrive,” Mr Schembri concluded.
