Report: TheLotter finds success with New Zealand Lotto copy product

A company in Malta, one of Europe’s’ key iGaming hubs, is apparently making a killing via a version of a product from a country more than 11,000 miles away.

According to the New Zealand HeraldTheLotter, a Malta-based and licensed lottery tickets and games company, is managing a direct copy of Lotto NZ’s Powerball product.

The outlet adds that Lotto NZ is aware of the NZPowerLuck, but it seems that there is not much the lottery can do to prevent TheLotter from doing so, with the using stopping New Zealanders from accessing its platform via geoblocking.

A Lotto NZ statement shared with the Herald explained that it was aware of TheLotter’s business model as a platform to “resell physical tickets bought locally in countries, or offer their own variations of national lotteries, or some combination”.

For Lottery Daily’s American audience, TheLotter will be a familiar name. The company is more well-known in the US for its ticket reselling, or courier products, which it has taken live in several US states.

This has left the company exposed to the regulatory review of couriers underway in some key US states like Texas, while others like Oregon, specifically the Oregon Lottery, are calling for the platforms to come under state regulatory frameworks.

According to TheLotter’s LinkedIn, the company is active in Texas, Oregon, Minnesota, Florida, New York and New Jersey, holding licences in the latter two states – the only two in the US where lottery couriers are regulated and subject to licensing.

In addition, the company is licensed in its home nation of Malta, in Sweden, Mexico, and in Australia’s Northern Territory – but it is not licensed or active in New Zealand, hence the self-imposed geoblocking.

Instead, it is finding success with its version of the New Zealand Powerball, which according to the Herald the firm cites as a successful offering which has caught the attention of a lot of customers.

It is unclear whether the New Zealand government will have any interest in taking action against TheLotter as the company is not directly targeting New Zealand customers.

The government has been persistently clamping down against illegal unlicensed operators targeting New Zealanders in recent months, such as making amendments to the country’s gaming legislation to make TAB NZ the only legal gaming operator, and formulating plans to launch an online casino market of 15 licensees.
