SWEDEN: Licensing requirements for game providers come into force in Sweden

Spelinspektionen (SGA) is introducing new rules in an attempt to make it harder for unlicensed operators to offer their gambling services to Swedes. From 1st of July 2023 onwards all game providers must be licensed by the SGA. So far the license has only been a requirement for operators and their brands.

Those game providers who still want to see themselves in business on the Swedish market have been able to apply for a license since March 2023. Which game providers are affected by the new licensing system? The simple answer is, everyone, or everyone who wants to offer their products in Sweden. Slots, live casino, poker and sportsbook providers are all defined as game software providers by the SGA.

So far a total of 141 game provider licenses have been issued. Several major international game providers have already applied for the license and obtained it to offer their services in Sweden, some of them include:

  • Evolution
  • NetEnt
  • Quickspin
  • Play’n GO
  • Yggdrasil
  • Nolimit City
  • Push Gaming
  • Relax Gaming
  • Elk Studios
  • Wazdan
  • Hacksaw Studios
  • Thunderkick
  • Big Time Gaming
  • Authentic Gaming

These providers have all been around for years and are well established in the industry. They are renowned for producing high-quality games with a wide variety of features that appeal to players.

The SGA is expected to continue granting more licenses to game providers in the coming months, complete with stringent checks and measures to guarantee that all services are of the highest quality. This will create even more choice for players looking for an online casino experience in Sweden.

For players to be able to gamble safely in Sweden, they should of course only play at online casinos with a valid Swedish license. Many unlicensed operators have however welcomed Swedish punters with open arms and succeeded in doing so. The new regulations that will apply from beginning of July and the introduction of payment blocks will hopefully be the beginning of the end for the unlicensed operators. Only time will tell.
