GERMANY: Gambling on the Internet: New seal to signify legal license and protect consumers

Gambling on the Internet: New seal to protect consumers

Highlights: The Joint Gambling Authority of the Länder (GGL) will introduce the seal from 1 July. Providers can use it to inform on the homepages of their homepages that they have a state permit in Germany. This ensures "more consumer safety and player protection," wrote the authority, which was only created in 2021. The legal German gambling market turned over around 13.4 billion euros in 2022, according to SPIEGEL's estimates. The largest part of this is accounted for by sports betting, at 1.4billion euros. In the fight against illegal online gambling, an official "seal of approval and approval" will be introduced. The competent authority promises more safety for consumers.

A special seal is intended to make the gambling market in Germany more transparent for consumers from 1 July. Providers can use the "GGL Seal of Approval and Approval" so that players can better distinguish legal gambling on the Internet from illegal gambling at first glance, the Joint Gambling Authority of the Länder (GGL) announced. SPIEGEL had already reported on this in June.

Providers could use it to inform on the homepages of their homepages that they have a state permit in Germany and that they comply with the requirements of the State Treaty on Gambling on player protection. This ensures "more consumer safety and player protection," wrote the authority, which was only created in 2021.

The legal German gambling market turned over around 13.4 billion euros in 2022. Gross gaming revenues, i.e. the stakes minus the winnings, are recorded. The information is based on the reports of the providers to the gambling supervisory authorities and on the tax statistics of the tax authorities.

The providers under the responsibility of GGL have a share of just over a quarter of this market – i.e. player revenues of around three and a half billion euros. The largest part of this is accounted for by sports betting, at 1.4 billion euros. This is followed by the class and social lotteries with 900 million euros and the organizers of virtual slot machine games and online poker with a market share of 800 million euros.
