Legislation could make sports gambling legal in North Carolina

A record number of Americans were slated to bet on the Super Bowl this year!

It's mostly illegal to gamble on sports in North Carolina, but that could be changing.

There's legislation to legalize sports gambling across the state, in person and online.

Sports fans at Tobacco Road Sports Cafe in Raleigh said legalize it and use the taxes for good.

Sports. They bring people together.

Even if your team isn't at the Super Bowl.

No matter how big a fan you are, you can only legally gamble on sports in North Carolina at designated casinos on tribal lands.

Otherwise, you're out of luck.

And yes, online too.

"Fan Duel, or Draft Kings. You can go to the sports books and place a bit. Here you can't do that," said sports fan Sean Small

A bill lawmakers are working to pass would allow sports gambling aside from tribal casinos and online.

So long as you're at least 21-years old.

Republican state representative Jason Saine said taxes from sports gambling could help better communities.

"We already have sports betting happening, this is a way to look at it from a legal framework and do address the fact that illegal gambling is happening across the state," said Saine. "This would put some structure in place to deal with that."

People we talk to said: use that money and improve the state.

"I'm a big proponent for teachers. They get paid like crap. Anything to help them out, I'm good for it," said Arthur Montague.

Representative Saine said the bill still has some work to go through, but sport gambling could be legalized in North Carolina come Spring.

One of big concern we've heard: fears of gambling addiction.

but the argument we've heard against that: people can get addicted to alcohol.

And that's legal.
