Mobile Sports betting resolution heading to Senate floor

PIERRE, S.D. — Mobile sports betting is one step closer to being law in South Dakota.

A Senate Joint Resolution, SJR 502, was passed at Senate Commerce and Energy Committee Tuesday by a vote of five to four. It would add an amendment to expand sports betting to mobile platforms statewide.

Sports wagering in the state was approved by the voters in 2020 while the frame work was done by lawmakers during the 2021 legislative session.

The first sports bet was placed in Deadwood in September before the kickoff of the 2021 NFL football season.

Opponents of the bill expressed concerns of how mobile voting could impact gambling addictions. The bill now moves on to the senate floor for debate and a potential vote.
