Louisiana governor vetoes ban on sweepstake gaming

Governor Jeff Landry has said that Senate Bill 181 could interfere with enforcement actions.

US.- Louisiana governor Jeff Landry has vetoed Senate Bill 181, which would have banned sweepstake gaming in the state. He said the initiative was unnecessary, too broad and could interfere with current enforcement actions.

Senator Adam Bass introduced the bill in early April and it faced little opposition. The Senate approved the bill by a 39-0 vote in April, and the Louisiana House of Representatives passed the bill with a 99-0 vote.

However, Landry said: “This bill attempts to criminalize certain secondary gambling activities on the Internet that are already prohibited in Louisiana. Our current Louisiana Gaming Control Board has the regulatory authority, control, and jurisdiction over all aspects of gaming activities and operations pursuant to the Louisiana Gaming Control Law.”

The governor noted that the board, the Louisiana State Police Gaming Enforcement Division and the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office monitor and regulate gaming in the state. He added that the state is already targeting illegal gambling, especially offshore and sweepstakes operators.

In April, Montana became the first US state to pass legislation to explicitly prohibit online sweepstakes casinos. Governor Greg Gianforte has signed Senate Bill 555, and the new law will enter into effect on October 1.
