Maryland, Virginia, Indiana, Wyoming, Massachusetts and New York introduce online gaming bills

Four aiming to join multi-state online poker compacts, though legalization faces significant challenges.

Lawmakers in at least six US states have introduced bills aiming to legalize igaming, including online poker and online casinos. These states—Maryland, Virginia, Indiana, Wyoming, Massachusetts and New York—represent a combined population of nearly 50 million.

All the proposed bills, except Indiana’s and New York’s, include provisions allowing the state to join multi-jurisdictional gaming compacts with other igaming states, such as the existing Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA) for interstate online poker.

Virginia’s igaming bill, however, has been postponed for further study, with plans to refile it next year.

It is not uncommon to see a plethora of online gaming bills introduced during this time of year when new legislative sessions are getting underway. In fact, every year, since the advent of igaming in the country, at least one or two states have consistently introduced bills each year in an effort to legalize online casinos, and this year is no different.

Despite this consistent push, many of these bills fail to advance past the committee or reach the governor’s desk for approval.
