Two sports betting ballot initiatives have been published in California, with their backers now seeking votes to force a vote in November.

The ballots must garner over 870,000 votes by April if they are to move to a ballot, after similar gaming ballots were defeated in November 2022.

Initiative 23-0030 Amendment 1 looks to legalise online and in-person sports betting and other gaming modalities on tribal lands.

The proposition says participating tribes would be required to pay up to 25 per cent of sports wagering profits to non-participating tribes and up to one per cent to the state for regulatory costs.

The initiative could bring in tens of millions of dollars to the state of California, “depending on how the measure is implemented and legally interpreted,” it says.

“Some portion of these revenues would reflect a shift from other existing state and local revenues.”

The other proposal, Initiative 23-0031, statec that tribes would be able to provide online sports betting on tribal lands to those aged 21 and over if approved by the electorate.

Ryan Tyler Walz, Reeve Collins and Kasey Thompson are all backers of the two initiatives.

However, the California Nations Indian Gaming Association, a key player in the debate, has already refused to support the measures.
