ANJ elects Jérôme Gallot to lead Médiateur des Jeux

Jérôme Gallot has been named the new Director of Médiateur des Jeux, the consumer ombudsman for French gambling. Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, President of the Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), appointed Gallot to strengthen oversight of consumer mediation in the gambling sector.

Gallot, a seasoned expert in consumer and competition law, was selected from a pool of prominent legal scholars. Since 1985, he has been a member of the Court of Auditors but spent most of his career outside the institution. He served as Director-General of the Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) from 1997 to 2003 and has extensive experience in regulatory roles.

The ANJ’s mediation process resolves disputes between players and gaming operators, including exclusive providers such as Française des Jeux and PMU. Consumers must first submit complaints directly to operators. If there is no response within 20 days or if the response is unsatisfactory, players can escalate their case to the Médiateur.

In 2023, Médiateur received 1,523 mediation requests, with 91% related to sports betting. Of these, 752 were rejected, primarily because consumers did not first contact the operator in writing. About one-third of cases resulted in partial or full resolution.

Gallot’s expertise positions him to streamline the mediation process and enhance consumer protections. His appointment reflects the ANJ’s commitment to safeguarding player rights and promoting fairness in the gambling industry.
