TEXAS LOTTERY COMMISSION’S GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS DIRECTOR RECEIVES TOP INDUSTRY HONOR

AUSTIN – The Texas Lottery Commission today announced that Nelda Treviño, the agency’s governmental affairs division director, was named a recipient of a 2024 Powers Award during the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries’ (NASPL) annual seminar, which is being held this week in Omaha, Nebraska.

“On behalf of our entire Texas Lottery team, I want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Nelda on this significant lottery industry honor,” said Ryan Mindell, executive director of the Texas Lottery and a 2023 Powers Award recipient. “Nelda has an uncanny ability to see the big picture perspective on every major issue that affects the agency. She is an incredibly effective communicator, consistently conveying the agency’s position with clarity and conviction, and she understands the lottery industry, which means she knows what success looks like for retailer associations, lobbyists, vendors, and the agency. Nelda’s high standards of professionalism and integrity make her a real asset to the Texas Lottery and a worthy recipient of this award.”

Each year, the Powers Awards are presented in recognition of the significant contributions lottery and lottery vendor employees have made through exceptional job performance. These awards are named in honor of the late Edward J. Powers, the ‘Father of U.S. Lotteries’. Powers spent more than 25 years in the lottery industry helping to define the most effective organizational structures that have become a blueprint for today’s lotteries. The drive, commitment and integrity Powers demonstrated set the standard of excellence exhibited by lottery and vendor employees nominated for this award. Treviño played a key role in the startup of the Texas Lottery and has contributed over 32 years of dedicated service since its inception. Before the Texas Lottery was formed, she worked in the legislative office at the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts where she was appointed to serve as a member of the Texas Lottery Implementation Task Force. Treviño guides the agency through the Legislative session every two years, working with her staff to understand, respond to, and implement legislation. In between sessions, she and her team provide updates to legislative members and staff, working on major projects like the ongoing Sunset Review of the agency and otherwise providing strategic guidance.
