Paulo Alexandre Duarte de Sousa took office today as the new president of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Lisbon

Portugal.- The Ibero-American Corporation of State Lotteries and Betting - Cibelae congratulated Paulo Alexandre Duarte de Sousa for assuming the presidency of Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Lisbon , a Portuguese institution that provides treatment and support to the sick and disabled and that operates the lottery in the European country.

"We trust that his leadership will further strengthen the commitment of this institution to the community," said Cibelae spokespeople.

Paulo Alexandre Duarte de Sousa took the oath on May 20 in the Draw Room , in a ceremony attended by the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, and the Minister of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security, Maria do Rosário Palma Ramalho.

Santa Casa is one of the oldest lottery operators in the world,  at 525 years old.  It began operating in 1783. Currently, it has approximately 5,000 points of sale in the world, mainly in Portugal, its country of origin.

Santa Casa and responsible gaming

Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Lisbon  committed to promoting an increasingly solid responsible gaming policy. In this sense,  Jogos Santa Casa (JSC)  presented in March of this year the campaign  Knowing how to stop is also winning” , which last week was launched on billboards, the Internet and radio, and last Friday it reached television.

The initiative aims to raise awareness among the population of the need to adopt moderate behavior. Likewise, they added that this campaign is one of Santa Casa's strategic measures planned for this year in terms of responsible gaming, the other two being the  association with the Institute of Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies (ICAD)  and  technological modernization .

Throughout 2024 and 2025,  the Jogos Santa Casa portal will be renewed and is expected to include new responsible gaming features , such as the ability for players to set their own spending limits.

Paulo Alexandre Duarte de Sousa took office today as the new provider of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Lisbon, stressing that he accepted the invitation “with pride, but also with a sense of responsibility. Proud because Santa Casa is an institution of invaluable public benefit, because its mission is to bring well-being to people, starting with the most vulnerable. A sense of responsibility because, being aware of the serious challenges that the institution faces today, I will face them while always honoring its historical legacy”, he told the packed audience in the Extraction Room.

Paulo Alexandre Duarte de Sousa promised “dedication to the workers and teams at Santa Casa”, as well as “to the multiple activities of the institution”, remembering the “Works of Mercy and its Commitment”.

In a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, the Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, Maria do Rosário Palma Ramalho, described the new provider as “a manager with vast and recognized professional experience, but also with proven in the social area”.

“The biggest challenge is to ensure that Santa Casa continues to provide the best assistance response, especially to the most unprotected and disadvantaged”, assured the minister, noting that the composition of the remaining Board will soon be announced and leaving a “message of confidence to all those who build the Holy House every day.”

At 56 years old, the institution's new provider has a degree in Business Management from ISEG and a postgraduate degree in Banking Management and Export Strategies. He has extensive experience in management positions, such as the presidency of the Executive Committee of Banco Comercial e de Investimentos, SA, the Central Real Estate Financing Department of Caixa Geral de Depósitos and the presidency of the Board of Directors of Wolfpart, SGPS.

In the social area, Paulo Alexandre Duarte de Sousa was vice-president of the Portuguese Red Cross, being part of the Board of Directors of the Estoril Coast Center for two terms. He also has experience in matters related to the real estate sector, having been responsible for the creation of the Social Rental Market. The now provider of Misericórdia de Lisboa was also responsible for the consortium composed of the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation and the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Group for the management of an Urban Development Fund, within the scope of the JESSICA Community Initiative, aimed at Rehabilitation and Urban Regeneration.
