The Connecticut Lottery Celebrates 46 Years of Fun

and Good Works for Connecticut

Forty-six years ago, the CT Lottery’s slogan was simple:  “Everyone’s a winner.”   The Lottery has gone through many changes over the years, but that motto has remained the same.  With prizes awarded to winners daily and the return of profits provided weekly to the state, EVERYONE in Connecticut is a WINNER!

In the past 46 years the CT Lottery has proven to be an increasingly successful venture for the state.  The Lottery has awarded more than $16.6 billion in prizes to winners, $1.54 billion in commissions to more than 2,900 CT Lottery Retailers and more than $9.4 billion to the state’s General Fund, which benefits everyone in Connecticut.

The Lottery also supports Responsible Gambling- a core value of the corporation. Since 1972, the Lottery has upheld its commitment to this cause by contributing more than $31 million for research, rehabilitation and awareness.

As the Lottery looks back on the past 46 years, some memorable milestones come to mind:

  • In 1975, the CT Lottery started to offer a different kind of excitement- scratch games! ‘Instant Match’ was the first scratch game in Connecticut, with a Top Prize of $10,000. Since then, the selection and highest Top Prize offered on Instant Games have grown significantly!  The CT Lottery has launched 1,263 Instant Games to date, with the highest Top Prize of $3 million!
  • In 1995, Connecticut joined the multi-state lottery game, ‘Powerball®’. In November of 2011, the largest Powerball® jackpot in CT Lottery history was claimed. The prize amount was $254.2 million!
  • In 2009, the CT Lottery created and launched ‘The Game of a Lifetime® —Lucky for Life®! The game offers a Top Prize of $1,000 a DAY for LIFE, and a 2ndTop Prize of $25,000 a YEAR for LIFE.  Thanks to quick growth and broad appeal, Lucky for Life currently is a multi-state game offered by twenty-five lotteries across the country- with plans for more to join in the coming months!
  • In December 2015, the CT Lottery became the first U.S. lottery to become a licensee of the British Columbia Lottery Corporation’s GameSense Responsible Gambling brand. This GameSense brand is designed to encourage players to use their GameSense, or common sense, when gambling, with messages such as “don’t chase your losses,” “know when to take a break,” and “set a limit.”
  • In April 2016, the CT Lottery introduced KENO, ‘ON THE SPOT FUN®’ to its players! KENO offers a chance up to win up to $1 million every 4 minutes, 7 days a week.

Looking ahead, the CT Lottery will continue to uphold its mission to raise revenue in an entrepreneurial manner for the State of Connecticut, consistent with the highest standards of good public policy and social responsibility, by offering products to our players that are fun and entertaining and by ensuring the public’s trust through integrity and honesty.

The CT Lottery reminds the public that purchasers must be 18 or older, and if they gamble to use their GameSense.  For information about the CT Lottery, stop by any CT Lottery retailer, visit CTLOTTERY.ORG, join us on Facebook (, Instagram (, Twitter (, or call (860) 713-2700.
