Revamped Mega Millions will give CT Lottery players better odds to win jackpot

WALLINGFORD, Conn. — The national lottery game Mega Millions is preparing for an extreme makeover, according to an announcement made by CT Lottery on Tuesday.

Mega Millions has been awarded a record seven jackpot wins exceeding $1 billion. Now, it is being made bigger and better than ever.

A new, improved game will be launched in April.

The enhancements include improved odds to win the jackpot, bigger and more frequently occurring jackpots and larger secondary prizes, as players can now win up to $10 million for matching the five white balls.

The improvements will also mean that every play includes a randomly selected multiplier that increases every non-jackpot base prize by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 10x. There will also be no breakeven prizes, as every win will deliver a prize at least two times the cost per play.

In a release, CT Lottery President and CEO Frank Suarez said that the player experience is being enhanced through a process of creation and innovation.

“We are excited to introduce new changes to the Mega Millions game,” Suarez said. “These adjustments not only increase the jackpot potential but also provide more ways for players to win, bringing even greater excitement and opportunity to the millions who participate.”

Suarez added that CT Lottery and its partners believe that the changes will create a more dynamic and rewarding experience for players across the state and country.

“We can’t wait for everyone to see what’s in store,” Suarez said.

The cost to play when the new and improved game launches next month will be $5. The launch will mark the second price adjustment since the game debuted more than 20 years ago and the first change since the current game matrix was adopted in 2017, according to the CT Lottery.

Mega Millions was established in 2002. Since the last game change in 2017, more than 1,200 Mega Millions’ players have become millionaires. That’s an average of almost three millionaires created each week.

Being a national game, tickets for Mega Millions are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings occur at 11 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesdays and Fridays in Atlanta.

Lottery profits support a range of great causes, including public health, libraries, public safety, education and more. Allocations vary by jurisdiction.

The current odds of Mega Millions are 1 in 24, and the jackpot odds are 1 in 302,575,350. When the new game launches, however, the odds will improve to 1 in 23.07, while the jackpot odds will increase to 1 in 290,472,336.
