Two Canadian provincial lotteries launch plans for unified betting platform

Two of the largest Canadian lotteries are looking to hire a technology firm to develop a shared online sports betting platform.

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) and the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) will have separate contracts for the supplier, which will produce a mulit-purpose betting platform for both.

The crown corporations – which are the only licensed gambling providers in their respective provinces – envision a platform which will cover trading and liability management services.

Citing Merx.com as a source, Canadian Gaming Business (CGB) reported that the general idea is for Canadians to have a “consistent sports betting experience” thanks to a single sports betting product under the PROLINE brand.

ALC confirmed for CGB that the contract’s closing date is set for 24 April.

Wider implications

It is important to note that both the ALC and the BCLC are members of the Canadian Lottery Coalition (CLC), however this project is separate from the CLC.

If the initiative proves successful, Loto-Québec will also be able to join at its own discretion.

The provincial operator told CGB: “Loto-Québec, at its option, will be able to enter into an Agreement with the Supplier.”

With the exception of Ontario, crown lotteries are the only legal gaming providers in Canada, operating on a provincial basis – it is worth noting that ALC is active in four provinces, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Another major crown corporation gaming operator in Canada is the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG), which operates in the only mulit-licence betting market in Canada, the above-mentioned Ontario.

OLG also maintains a sportsbook offering, having brokered a deal with B2B supplier Kambi for the provision of gaming tech after long-term partner FDJ pulled back to defend its French home market gains.
