Kansas Lottery has selected Pollard Banknote to provide a full-service iLottery solution, built on the company’s Pollard Catalyst Gaming Platform.
Following approval, the lottery will launch online ticket sales in early 2025. Players will be able to buy scratch tickets, Powerball, and Mega Millions tickets directly from the Kansas Lottery website or mobile app.
Stephen Durrell, executive director of the Kansas Lottery, said this has been a longtime dream of the lottery. He said they are happy to finally see it through, according to a news post by Drew Ellis at PlayiLottery:
“Giving our players the ability to purchase our products in this fashion is something they have wanted for a very long time.
We are excited to be able to provide new games and purchasing options, safely and securely, for players in the state.
Just as we were pleased to bring Kansas sports betting through mobile applications, we are happy to now be able to provide players this new opportunity under existing law.”
Key takeaways
iLottery launch will focus on digital sales, enhanced player experience
Kansas Lottery is ready to enter the digital age, offering electronic sales of popular games like Mega Millions and Powerball. This modernization effort is particularly timely, given the recent allocation of traditional lottery revenues to the ‘Attracting Professional Sports to Kansas Fund.’
Through the launch, Pollard Banknote will provide geolocation services using its GeoLocs technology. Other states use this technology for online lottery sales.
Also, the company will be handling various backend tasks for the Kansas Lottery, including marketing, draw operations, risk management, and customer support.
“These are exciting times for the Kansas Lottery and for Pollard Banknote,” Doug Pollard, co-CEO of Pollard Banknote, said.
“Our decades-long relationship with the lottery combined with our game-changing Pollard Catalyst technology and what we believe is the strongest team in the industry will deliver the best player experience and is a winning combination for the lottery and its players.
“We look forward to delivering an exceptionally strong iLottery program,” he continued.
The Pollard Catalyst Gaming Platform will integrate The Kansas Lottery’s existing player loyalty program, PlayOn. This integration offers an established online player base and a streamlined program launch.
The Pollard Catalyst platform and iLottery solution are being provided under a current contract extension that runs until Oct. 31, 2026.
As the Kansas Lottery moves forward with online ticket sales, responsible gaming remains a top priority.
Stephanie Roberts of the South Central Kansas Problem Gambling Task Force has raised concern in that regard and said she believes this new convenience might contribute to a rise in gambling addiction, according to KWCH.
A year of mixed results for the Kansas Lottery
The Kansas Lottery narrowly missed setting a new sales record in fiscal year 2024, despite a strong performance in June.
With a 12-month total of $337.8 million, it was just $250,615 shy of the previous year’s record. While lottery draw games saw a boost in sales, a $4.7 million drop in scratch ticket sales offset the gains, leaving the lottery just 0.07% below the FY23 record.
Powerball sales were a highlight for the lottery, increasing 15.2% to $50.8 million, a $6.5 million improvement over the prior year.
