Louisiana Lottery Finishes Second-Best Year Ever, Transfers Nearly $205 Million to State Treasury

The Louisiana Lottery Corporation ended its fiscal year with nearly $642.8 million in revenue, making 2024 the Lottery’s second-best year ever. Resulting transfers to the state treasury for K-12 public education were almost $205 million, about $13.4 million better than the state anticipated.

“The Lottery team is proud to have topped $600 million in sales for the third time in our 33-year history!” said Lottery President Rose Hudson. “We’re equally proud to have delivered nearly $205 million to the state treasury to support K-12 public education. We remain committed to innovating and providing exciting games and experiences for our players while continuing to generate significant returns for Louisiana.”

Scratch-offs continued to be the top seller in the Lottery’s game portfolio, ending the year at $311.7 million, which is about half of the Lottery’s sales.

Over the last couple of years, the Lottery began adjusting scratch-off game prize structures, increasing prize payouts, adding additional higher price-point games and launching new types of games with one-of-a-kind experiential prizes. This strategy has been well received by players, resulting in net gains for the state.

Sales of the Lottery’s daily numbers games, Pick 3, Pick 4 and Pick 5, were the second highest revenue generator, ending at approximately $141.7 million for fiscal year 2024.

Fourth quarter revenue figures for fiscal year 2024 totaled $148,837,917 with $50,809,985 being transferred to the state treasury.

The Lottery's total fiscal-year state transfers reached $204,831,766. Since the Lottery began operations in 1991, more than $13.5 billion in revenue has been generated, primarily from ticket sales. Nearly $4.8 billion has been transferred to the state treasury, amounting to about 35% of total revenue.

In addition to state coffers, local businesses that sell Lottery products also benefited from the Lottery in fiscal year 2024. Fourth quarter retailer compensation totaled $8,327,306, including sales commission, incentives for cashing winning tickets and bonuses for selling big winning tickets; this brings fiscal-year total earnings to nearly $35.7 million. Since the Lottery’s inception, retailers have earned over $744 million.

Lottery ticket purchasers must be at least 21 years of age.
