After 35 years of the Kentucky Lottery, Kentucky students are feeling lucky to get scholarships and grants thanks to lottery proceeds benefiting education.
Not everyone who gets a lottery ticket will win the big bucks, but they are contributing to Kentucky education. The Kentucky Lottery celebrated 35 years at the Capitol on Tuesday, with the prize of making a difference in the lives of students. Mary Harville is the president and CEO of the Kentucky Lottery.
- “That’s what we, as Kentuckians, want for our state. We want our young people to stay right here at home to be educated and trained, and to make our workforce stronger to raise their own families here,” Harville said.
“Without the work-ready scholarship, my family would have had to pay my tuition out of pocket. That definitely would not have me where I am now in life as quickly as I am,” Miles said.
Governor Andy Beshear spoke on what this means for Kentucky education, saying the testimonials and success stories come from much more than a lucky draw.
“Because of your efforts, more people have had dollars going towards their education. Because of your efforts, you’ve been able to expand into National Guard programs and teacher loan forgiveness. Because of your efforts, Kentucky is a better, more educated place. I hope you feel the purpose each and every day for what you do, and I hope you see these students’ stories about the good that your work does,” Beshear said.
At the celebration, Beshear proclaimed March 26 as Kentucky Lottery Day.
