Greece joins the Eurojackpot cooperation Europe’s biggest lottery continues to grow
Eurojackpot - Europe’s biggest lottery cooperation – continues to grow: Greece is the 19th country to join the group of States operating the Eurojackpot cooperation. On 8th March, for the first time, players will participate in the lottery for jackpots of up to 120 million euros.
Andreas Kötter, Eurojackpot’s Chairman and the Director for WestLotto comments: “In 2012, we launched with seven countries. Now, Eurojackpot is a unique instance of European cooperation, as demonstrated by the fact that we have almost tripled that figure, such that people from all of these countries can dream of winning the jackpot.”
All of the connections for this major European project come together at the Münster headquarters of Germany’s biggest state lottery. Players’ bets from all participating countries are compiled here – and also in Copenhagen – followed by analysis of the winnings and of the odds. Draws take place in Helsinki each Tuesday and Friday. Since 2022, when the product was adapted, there are jackpot winnings of up to 120 million euros, which is the highest figure that can be won on any lottery in Germany.
Now that the Greek lottery group, OPAP, has signed up, the resultant combine represents a total of 34 state-licensed enterprises in what has become the most successful lottery launch for decades. Germany is represented by all 16 companies from its federal states. Most recently Poland came onboard as a new member of the group of Eurojackpot countries in 2017.
As Andreas Kötter indicates, the challenge is to bring together the widest range of lottery systems and structures of legal regulations from individual states in the Eurojackpot cooperation: “What brings us all together is that: as state-licensed lottery companies, we play an indispensible part in promoting the common good in Europe, which would not be possible without Eurojackpot. And our joint venture also goes far to prove that collaboration at European level can be of benefit to everyone.”
Now that Greece has joined, the venture takes in approximately 325 million European citizens. Since the time of the first draw, which took place in Helsinki on 23rd March 2012, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands and Slowenia, together with Germany, have joined the ranks. Additionally Iceland, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Slowakia, Spain, the Czech Republic and Hungary are involved. On the occasion of each draw, jackpots ranging from 10 and 120 million euros are played for, on the basis of the 5/50 formula together with the Euro numbers 2 out of 12.
