NCEL: Mega Millions plus Powerball equal half a billion dollars in jackpots

RALEIGH – North Carolinians can play this week for jackpots in the Mega Millions and Powerball games that together offer more than half a billion dollars in prizes.

The first chance to win big starts tonight in the Mega Millions drawing where the jackpot stands at $218 million as an annuity or $113.8 million cash. The second chance comes Wednesday night when the Powerball jackpot stands at a $285 million as an annuity or $148.1 million in cash. That adds up to $503 million in jackpots over the next two nights.

“It’s exciting to see two jackpots this big at the same time two nights in a row,” said Mark Michalko, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery. “Remember to check your tickets closely. There are nine ways to win in both games and we’re seeing some big prizes won in North Carolina in these drawings.”

Monday’s Powerball drawing produced a $100,000 win for someone who bought their ticket at the Adam’s Mart on Elm Lane in Charlotte. The $3 Power Play ticket matched numbers on four of the white balls and the red Powerball to win $50,000. Since it was a Power Play ticket, the prize doubled to $100,000 when the Power Play multiplier hit 2x.

As of Tuesday, the $1 million prize won in Saturday’s drawing remains unclaimed. The winner bought that ticket in Cleveland County at the Circle K on Cleveland Avenue in Kings Mountain.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million. The odds of winning a Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302 million.

Players can buy Powerball or Mega Millions tickets at any lottery retail location or through Online Play on the lottery’s website, www.nclottery.com.

Ticket sales from draw games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $2.5 million a day on average for education. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.
