More retail casino gambling is in the pipeline for the State of New York, but the current governor isn’t yet weighing in on possible locations.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, an overwhelming favorite to win her election later this year, said at a recent debate that she doesn’t have a preference on where the three new casinos will be built. According to Hochul, the state is still gathering information and data.

Following the legalization of four upstate casinos around a decade ago, the Empire State is now moving to build three in the so-called downstate region, possibly inside New York City.

“I’m not going to put my finger on the scale to say where I want this to go because I want to get the outside experts … to make the decision and do the analysis at existing sites,” Hochul, a Democrat, said. “There are some in Queens, there are some in West Chester, there are some in Nassau, as well as Manhattan. As governor, it is my responsibility to be open minded for all these options right now. That’s exactly what I am doing.”

New York has seen a flurry of gambling expansion in recent years. In January, the state’s online sports betting market kicked off, generating nearly $2 billion in handle in the first 30 days.

According to an announcement from Hochul in early June, New York has generated over $267 million in tax revenue from sports wagering since January 2022. Mobile sports wagering accounted for $263 million since Jan. 8, and sports wagering at New York’s four commercial casinos made up $4.3 million of total revenue since July 2019.

There are also ongoing efforts to legalize online casinos, but those fell short in 2022.
