The Maryland State Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) has released its latest revenue report revealing that the state’s six licensed casinos generated $172.9 million during the month of December.
The latest data marks an increase of 7.86% from the previous month when casinos generated $160.3 million in revenue and sees December become the second most successful month in the history of Maryland casino gaming.
December’s figures represent an increase of over $53.5 million on the same period in 2020 although the report does note that casino were operating at limited capacity during that time.
Contributions to the state from casino gaming totaled over $71 million, a 5.1% increase on taxes paid during the previous month. Of that figure, $51.7 million went directly to the Education Trust Fund (ETF). $4.7 million more than in November.
Speaking following the release of the latest data, Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin said:

The monthly report also gives a full breakdown of revenues posted by each of the state’s six casinos:
- MGM National Harbor — $74,513,341 up 53.5% from December 2020
- Live! Casino & Hotel — $62,417,986 up 45.6% from December 2020
- Horseshoe Casino —$17,054,795 up 33.8% from December 2020
- Hollywood Casino — $7,195,434 up 9.4% from December 2020
- Ocean Downs Casino — $6,712,845 up 32.1% from December 2020
- Rocky Gap Casino — $5,007,102 up 41.2% from December 2020
Sports betting launched in Maryland on Thursday December 9th as Governor Larry Hogan placed a wager on the NFL at MGM National Harbor in Maryland while four more sportsbooks opened during the month. However, despite all licensed sports betting operators launching during December, the MLGCC has yet to release revenue data for sports wagering alone.
Maryland is one of the U.S states that also has regulated, legal online casinos.
