The Council of Europe is holding today a conference in Morocco, in collaboration with La Marocaine Des Jeux et des Sports, focusing on ACT - Addressing Competition Manipulation Together - for preserving the integrity of sports by combating illegal betting. This event aims to raise awareness and engage stakeholders in the fight against manipulation of sports competitions.
The conference was opened by Mr Chakib Benmoussa, Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sport, Morocco, and brings together key players from various sectors to develop an operational action plan against illegal betting.
As the United Lotteries for Integrity in Sports (ULIS) is a partner of the Council of Europe on the ACT Project, ULIS's General Secretary, Luca Esposito Poleo, provided valuable insights into the situation of sports competition manipulation based on ULIS's alerts, intelligence and statistics.
Esposito also shed light on the alarming state of the illegal betting market. He emphasized the importance of conducting research in this area to gain a comprehensive understanding of the issue. In this sense, we learned that the World Lottery Association (WLA), in collaboration with the University of Lausanne, is preparing a research paper on the estimation of the current illegal betting market size.
