German Lotto and Totoblock (DLTB) draws a positive balance for 2021

DLTB draws a positive balance for 2021

January 05, 2022
  • 181 new millionaires in Germany
  • Around 3.87 billion euros nationwide profit distribution
  • 7.9 billion euros stakes
  • Every day around 8.8 million euros for the common good

To turn an average of three people into happy millionaires per week: This is what the 16 state lottery companies that make up the German Lotto and Totoblock (DLTB) achieved in 2021. A total of 7.9 billion euros was spent on lotteries nationwide. For the state lottery companies permitted by the state, this means a slight decrease of 0.3 percent compared to the previous year.

“We are satisfied with this result. The stakes in the DLTB are stable compared to 2020 and are subject to jackpot-related fluctuations. In addition, the stakes were made in 52 events in 2021, but 53 events were used in the previous year, ”summarizes Axel Holthaus, managing director of LOTTO Lower Saxony, the leading block partner since the beginning of the year.

In addition, in 2021, the taxes and duties paid to the respective state budgets and beneficiaries from the stakes made it possible to finance many projects aimed at the common good in all federal states. Around 3.2 billion euros - i.e. around 8.8 million euros per day - have benefited the general public, particularly in the areas of welfare, sport, culture, monument preservation and environmental protection.

The public interest-oriented gambling of the state lottery companies is expressly strengthened by the State Gambling Treaty 2021 (GlüStV 2021) on the basis of regulatory law and within the framework of federal jurisdiction. “The State Treaty on Gaming 2021, which has been in force since July 1, 2021, provides the regulatory framework for the next few years. The comprehensive political consensus with which the State Treaty on Gambling 2021 was agreed is a success, as otherwise there would have been a patchwork of gambling regulation - with corresponding effects on the protection of players and minors, ”says Sven Osthoff, Managing Director of LOTTO Lower Saxony.

Axel Holthaus adds: “For the DLTB it is crucial that the new and nationwide uniform gaming regulation, which provides for the coexistence of the tried and tested state lottery event monopoly and the liberalized gaming monopoly, is also legally secured. From our point of view, the previous State Treaty on Gambling was certainly significantly better than its reputation and has withstood all legal attacks even by the highest court. The companies of the DLTB continue to stand united for the unchanged target achievement according to § 1 of the State Treaty on Gambling 2021. "

LOTTO 6aus49 most popular lottery

In 2021, the game participants nationwide preferred to submit their tips at LOTTO 6aus49. With a stake of 4 billion euros, the lottery still accounts for around 51 percent of the total stake in the DLTB.

In addition, the change to the winning plan for the classic in September 2020 had positive effects: In the first 15 months since the adjustment there were larger jackpots, higher prizes in all prize categories and significantly more million prizes with six correct numbers without a super number. "The game participants benefited significantly from this further development in LOTTO 6aus49 - with a six in LOTTO you have another chance of winning millions," says Axel Holthaus happily.

Eurojackpot still successful in 2021

Eurojackpot defended second place of the most popular lotteries in 2021. With around 1.4 billion euros in stakes, the European lottery generates around 17.3 percent of the total stakes of the lottery companies that make up the DLTB. “The slight decrease compared to the previous year can be explained by the shorter jackpot phases. Eurojackpot is a lottery product that lives from high sums in prize class 1. The cooperation at Eurojackpot is an exemplary example of successful cooperation, which expresses the European idea of gambling in the 18 participating countries, ”explains Sven Osthoff.

To mark the tenth anniversary of the European lottery, a second drawing will be introduced on Tuesday from March 25, 2022. Likewise, the upper limit for the maximum jackpot increases from 90 to 120 million euros. To make these changes possible, the game formula is adjusted to 5aus50 and 2aus12.

Further increase in online stakes

The regional websites and apps of the respective DLTB companies, where you can conveniently submit your tips for most game offers online, enjoyed an increasing number of users and game orders. In this way, including the game tips prepared via the service and information portal www.LOTTO.de, stakes of 985 million euros were generated in 2021. This is an increase of around 7.8 percent compared to the previous year. “True to the motto 'Be where your customer is', the 16 state lottery companies of the DLTB also offer their attractive product portfolio online. With the help of secure and modern technology, they can comprehensively fulfill their channeling task on the Internet, ”explains Sven Osthoff.

Structural significance of the acceptance points

The dense network of around 21,000 acceptance points throughout Germany is not only the most important pillar of the offer of the state lottery companies. “In addition, we and our contractual partners made a significant contribution to supporting rural areas in the second year of the pandemic. The acceptance points are often part of the remaining village shops, which also keep small communities alive, ”says Axel Holthaus.

Change of leadership

LOTTO Niedersachsen has been the lead block partner of the DLTB since January 1, 2022. “In light of the current State Treaty on Gaming in 2021, one of the main tasks will be to strengthen the DLTB's pooled lottery offers in an increasingly digital and competitive environment,” explains Axel Holthaus. Finally, Sven Osthoff adds: “We look forward to being able to bring our digital expertise to the DLTB even more strongly in the future. It is important to keep the common good-oriented lottery principle sustainable through the digital transformation.
