Education Lottery passes $30 billion in sales milestone

RALEIGH – The N.C. Education Lottery passed a major milestone in May, rolling past $30 billion in total sales.

Ticket sales since the lottery started 15 years ago cleared the milestone on Monday, May 10th. Along with the sales, the lottery posted some other big numbers including:

  • $18.5 billion in prizes
  • $2.1 billion in commissions to retailers
  • $8.1 billion for education programs in North Carolina.

“What those numbers show is the power that U.S. lotteries have for doing good for the people we serve,” said Mark Michalko, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery. “You can’t achieve results like this unless the players like your games and are having fun winning prizes. It’s exciting to see and to be part of the team that is making this happen.”

So far, the Education Lottery has managed to increase its sales every year of its operations and is on track to set a new sales record this year. Last year, sales were $3.02 billion. The lottery averaged $8.2 million a day in ticket sales, $5.3 million a day in prizes, and $2 million a day raised for education.

North Carolina dedicates the money raised by the lottery to education programs. Currently, the money raised supports public school by helping with the costs of school staff and school transportation; helps to build new schools and repairs older ones; provides scholarships and grants to attend college based on financial need; and supports NC Pre-K, a free academic prekindergarten program for at-risk four-year-olds.
