The California state Senate approved Senate Bill 1390 which seeks to legalize sports betting in California at locations that have an existing license to gamble, including horse racing tracks, card rooms and tribal casinos. It now moves to the California State Assembly.
The California state Senate on Tuesday approved Senate Bill 1390 which seeks to legalize sports betting in California at locations that have an existing license to gamble, including horse racing tracks, card rooms and tribal casinos.
The bill passed by a 32-2 vote. It now moves to the California State Assembly.
Senate Bill 1390 was introduced in February by Roderick Wright, D-Inglewood. Wright is the chairman of the Committee on Government Organization, which oversees horse racing. Wright’s district is home to Hollywood Park, a major horse racing track in Los Angeles County.
Wright wrote the law to allow sports gambling on professional and college games — but only for licensed and regulated gaming operators.
The law is written so that a bet must be placed in person, which would create some new foot traffic at tracks. That language sidesteps a federal law banning sports betting using a phone.
Currently, federal law allows sports book in only four states: Nevada, Oregon, Delaware and Montana. New Jersey’s governor is now contesting that federal law, which could open sports book to states that have laws enabling it.
