Oregon Lottery sees sports betting handle and revenue grow in June

Oregon’s sports betting handle and revenue continued to grow in June.

According to the latest figures from the Oregon Lottery, the SBTech-powered mobile sports betting platform, Scoreboard, generated $777,903 in revenue from $7.9m in bets in June.

June’s figures marked an increase on the $7.3m wagered and $598,061 in revenue generated back in May.

Soccer, MMA and table tennis popular among bettors

With the absence of major US sporting events such as football, basketball, hockey and baseball, bettors in the state once again turned to other sports that resumed earlier.

Table tennis was the most popular sport to bet on with a total of $2.8m staked on the sport. While this is down from the $3.8m wagered on the sport in May it still represents the largest handle for an individual sport in June. The lottery managed to generate $178,579 from table tennis betting in June.

Soccer was the second-most popular sport to bet on with $1.9m wagered on events. The Oregon Lottery managed to generate $239,360 from soccer betting.

Bettors in the state wagered just over $1m on MMA events, of which the Oregon Lottery held onto $205,695.

Betting habits

Throughout June, 7,782 unique players were active and placed 258,565 bets with an average value of $30.64. A total of 674 new players registered accounts with Scoreboard in June.

Bettors spent the most on in-play sports betting, which accounted for $4.5m of the states handle compared to the $3.4m staked on pre-match bets.

However, pre-match bets accounted for $461,181 of total revenue while in-play bets generated $316,721 in betting revenue.

Sports betting in Oregon

Prior to the passage of the professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), Oregon, Nevada, Montana and Delaware already offered a form of legal sports betting. The existing sports betting laws were ‘grandfathered’ in under PASPA allowing Oregon, and the other states, to continue to offer sports betting even after PASPA became law in 1992.

Oregon’s sports betting offering came in the form of its Sports Action parlay game which was shut down in 2007.

In June 2019, the Oregon Lottery inked a contract with SBTech to power the Lottery’s online and land-based sports betting products. The Lottery and SBTech launched the sports betting platform Scoreboard in October, a month later than initially expected.

Prior to the launch of Scoreboard, bettors in the state were limited to using the land-based sportsbook at the Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln. The tribal casino launched sports betting in late August, and up until October, was the only legal sports betting option in the Beaver State.
