Total Aid To Education Contribution up 3.2% or $105 million over 2016-17

The New York State Gaming Commission today announced yet another monumental year marked by a record-breaking Aid To Education contribution totaling $3.37 Billion and traditional Lottery sales and Video Lottery Gaming net win totaling $9.97 Billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2018.

“New York’s Lottery and Video Lottery Gaming operations continue to lead the industry in contributions made in support of New York schools,” said Commission Acting Executive Director Ronald Ochrym. “We are pleased to be able to maintain funding for education while incorporating best practices to promote responsible gaming in the state.”

As the largest lottery in the nation, the New York Lottery has earned $64.6 billion to support education statewide since 1967. The $3.37 billion in Aid To Education raised in Fiscal Year 2017-18 represents 13 percent of total state education aid to local school districts.

The funds disbursed by the state provide a valuable means of support to school districts in the state. New York Lottery and Video Lottery Gaming revenue is distributed to school districts by the same formula used to distribute other state aid to education. It takes into account a school district’s size and income level; larger, lower-income school districts receive proportionately larger shares of Lottery/Video Lottery Gaming school funding.

The New York Lottery also has a significant impact on the economy in the state. The Lottery’s 17,000 plus retailers earned $475 million in commissions during FY2017-18. The commissions paid to retailers help support businesses large and small in the state. Video Lottery Gaming operators earned $913 million in commissions during the same time frame.
